Overview

Four primary DR patterns: Active-passive (primary active, DR on standby), Active-active (both sites active), Pilot light (minimal DR infrastructure, scale up on failover), Warm standby (scaled-down DR environment).

Key Concepts

Active-passive: RTO minutes to hours. Active-active: RTO seconds. Pilot light: RTO 30–60 minutes. Warm standby: RTO 5–30 minutes. Each pattern has different cost and complexity implications.

Best Practices

Select DR pattern based on RTO/RPO requirements and cost constraints. Active-active provides best RTO but highest cost. Test failover procedures regularly.

Key Considerations

Active-active requires applications designed for multi-site operation. Data synchronization introduces latency. Cloud DR enables pilot light and warm standby without secondary data center investment.
